Professor Alan Rowan is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) at the University of Wollongong (UoW), where he leads the university’s research strategy, drives innovation, and strengthens collaborations with industry, government, and global research partners.
Prior to joining UOW, Professor Rowan served as the Director of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at The University of Queensland, leading more than 500 researchers and professional staff.
An internationally recognized scientist and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, Professor Rowan has published more than 400 papers and made seminal contributions at the interface of chemistry, biology, materials science, and nanotechnology.
At UOW, Professor Rowan is focused on accelerating research excellence, expanding international visibility, and building ambitious partnerships with industry and government. His priorities include driving innovation precinct growth, strengthening pathways for commercialisation, and positioning UOW as a leader in research that delivers tangible societal and economic impact
